Preact’s Autonumber Solution can be used on any entity, for an automatic number applied to unique opportunities, projects etc.
For this demonstration, I’ve enabled it for accounts. If I click “New”, to create a new account, you can see this field here called “Custom Account Number”.
What we have done with our solution, unlike the out-of-the-box autonumbering, is that our solution uses a field value.
So, if I create a new company here, called “ABC Consulting Ltd”, and I save this.
Then what the solution will do is take the next number in sequence, and take a couple of characters from the value in “Account Name” as a prefix.
As we can see it’s taken the first two characters from the “Account Name” and it’s the next number in order.
So, compared to the out-of-the-box autonumbering solution, we can set Preact’s Autonumber Solution to use any field value.
For example, if there is an opportunity type, or project type and you want to prefix it with a status and then a unique number to follow as a suffix, we can do that.
How it Works
Preact's Autonumber solution works across any standard or custom entity in Dynamics 365 where a unique reference is needed. This can include contacts, accounts, projects, opportunities and many more record types.
In comparison to out-of-the-box Dynamics automatic numbering capabilities, our solution enables a custom prefix to be set for each entry using the value from an associated field. For example, automatically prefix an account reference 'MAR' for a company named Markham Solutions. Or, use a relationship type status field to personalise each entry. For instance, a unique reference on a premium tier account could be set with the prefix of 'PREM' followed by the next numbers in the sequence.
Added flexibility enables the amount of characters in each prefix to be set. As an example, an account based reference could be set to use the first four characters from the account name value, or use the opening two characters from a status field.
Extended functionality enabling a custom suffix to be applied to each number.
