Microsoft Reverses Deprecation Of Dynamics 365 Add-In For Outlook

Last year, ahead of its Dynamics 365 v9.0 release, Microsoft announced it would be deprecating its Dynamics 365 add-in for Outlook.

While this would remained supported in D365 v9.0, system admins were put on notice that the Outlook add-in would be removed in a future update.

However, Microsoft has now reversed this decision stating that it will continue to support the legacy add-in for Outlook as well as the newer Dynamics 365 App for Outlook.

Microsoft has now confirmed that the Outlook add-in will continue to be fully supported in current and future versions of Dynamics 365, and bug fixes will continue to be released. It has has signaled upcoming improvements to its performance and reliability but there are no plans to add new features to the Outlook add-in.

The decision acknowledges that functionality gaps currently exist between its Dynamics 365 App for Outlook and the Outlook add-in which prevents the D365 App for Outlook from being 'a viable replacement for the Outlook add-in'.

This is especially good news for customers using an older version of Dynamics 365 / CRM who are planning to upgrade but are concerned they might lose some functionality with the disappearance of the legacy Outlook add-in.

Continuing support for the Dynamics 365 add-in for Outlook will ensure that customers will not lose core functionality.

Microsoft says it is doubling down on the development of its D365 App for Outlook and this continues to be its long term solution for connecting Outlook and Dynamics 365.

In its blog post Microsoft states:

The reversal of the deprecation of Dynamics 365 for Outlook does not change the fact that COM add-ins (like Dynamics 365 for Outlook) are an older and slower technology. Dynamics 365 App for Outlook is based on newer Office add-in technology. This is an area where the Outlook team is also investing heavily. Unlike COM add-ins, Office add-ins do not have any code physically installed on the user's device or on the Outlook client. They are easier to deploy and maintain, much more reliable, and work across platforms.

We encourage our customers to adopt Dynamics 365 App for Outlook, which is a modern Office add-in, and hope that those who have already migrated are able to see the benefits of this modern user experience in terms of interaction as well as deployment.
